Shadow Cities: The Photography of Sidney Gaspar
Self trained Brazilian picture taker Sidney Gaspar records the play of light and shadow in his dramatic scenes shot in high contrast. Scenes from Gaspar's day by day life in the port city of Santos are interceded by the craftsman's focal point, changing ordinary scenes into painterly structures.
The mental scenes catch emotional urban vistas with insightful consideration as sky, ocean, and city go up against fantastic, extraordinary characteristics. Design shapes linger like creepy skeletons, and mountains ascend from the dim waters in a scene that looks without human life, even dystopian.
